Silk Road or Silk Route refers to an ancient trade routes network that connects all three Asia, Europe and Africa extending more than 6500kms, used mainly to transport Chinese Silk to Europe through Central Asia from 2nd century BC. Many trade routes that exist in both land and sea connected the main Silk Route and traded in different assets ranging from salt to gold. Silk Route’s greatest addition to world history was not mere trading of few commodities but exchange art, science and ideas between Asia, Europe and Africa and is known as the first information superhighway of the world.

The Silk route of the state is an outgrowth of an ancient trade route from Tamluk that took the route of the sea and reached Sri Lanka, Bali, Java and other places of Far East. Part of the old silk route through Bhutan, West Bengal and East Sikkim was quite less travelled but is discovered by early traders at the age of First Century AD.

South West Silk Route linked Tibet to the Yunan Province of China and finally to India till Afghanistan where silk was not the most treasured item traded but horses, tea with sugar, salt, copper, and cotton are also traded in some parts of Central Asia with the help of horse caravans so this route is named as Dianzang Chama Gudao by the Chinese.

He famous British Army Explorer Sir Francis Edward Younghusband led a successful mission through Nathu La to capture Lhasa travelling through much of the present North and East Sikkim’s silk Route corridor to enter Tibet with his troops in our modern history of the South West Silk route. Without him the topic of Silk Route would remain incomplete.
